The European Independent Film Festival announces "Europe's Best Independent Film" for 2013
Europe's premier event for independent cinema, ÉCU - The European Independent Film Festival announces its 2013 award-winning films including its highest honor, "Europe's Best Independent Film 2013" award. After showcasing 108 films from 35 countries, ÉCU 2013 ended its indie packed weekend with a spirited final ceremony recognizing its 25 award winners in 17 categories. Winners included: Best Director for Good Night (Dir. Muriel d'Ansembourg), Best European Independent Dramatic Feature 2013 for Girl Shaped Love Drug (Dir. Simon Powell), Best European Independent Dramatic Short 2013 for 82 (Dir. Calum Macdiarmid) and the festival's most prestigious award, Europe's Best Independent Film 2013 went to Othello (Dir. Hammudi Al-Rahmoun Font). ÉCU also recognized one exemplary film, A Tempo: 3rd Act (Dir. Maria Abdel Karim) from its new addition, the Special Arab Selection, for "The Ahmed Khedr Award for Excellence in Arab Filmmaking."
"I love the care and attention paid to my film and rather than hearing squeals we hear passionate 'awwws'. I really feel like this is home, I belong here." said award winner, Don Thacker, winner of Best Non-European Independent Dramatic Feature for Motivational Growth.
For the last eight years, ÉCU has been a launching pad for many talented independent filmmakers. The festival is extremely proud to help further the careers of these passionately driven artists who do not benefit from large production budgets and still create incredible cinema. This only confirms ÉCU's mission to discover and promote extraordinary independent films from around the world and continue being a major European cultural event
"It was a great honor to showcase such an incredible array of films this past weekend. If these are the storytellers of the future than they certainly offer insight into what this next generation of filmmakers can do. I am filled with a renewed excitement for what is to come in 2014," commented Scott Hillier, Academy Award-honored filmmaker and ÉCU President.
