The 17th Annual TromaDance is Tromimminent, coming to the Paper Box Theatre in Brooklyn, NY this Friday, July 29th and Saturday, July 30th 2016. Every year on the Saturday of the TromaDance Festival a featured panel of experienced artists, entrepreneurs and experts in the independent arts. This year's theme is "Getting your Movie Made in the Age of PC Police" and the panelists include Henry Zebrowski, Rose Ganguzza, Alan Merrill and Ken Hanley and moderated by Lloyd and Patricia Kaufman, it was announced today by Elizabeth D'Ambrosio, spokesperson for Troma Entertainment.
Moderator Lloyd Kaufman is President of Troma Entertainment and creator of The Toxic Avenger. He is a legend in the world of independent filmmaking. Kaufman started making movies during his college years at Yale University, where he studied Chinese. He has upheld Troma Entertainment as a paragon of integrity in support of young artists and filmmakers for them to pursue their movie-making interests independently, and offers distribution to those filmmakers that may not find it anywhere else. Kaufman is infamously known as one of the first contemporary filmmakers to experiment with and develop crossover styles in genre movies. The new and original work, exemplified in Kaufman's classic films like Class of Nuke 'Em High and Tromeo and Juliet. He continues to develop and tackle new, highly topical social as well as environmental issues, as in recent work, Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 1 and soon to be released sequel, Return to Return to Nuke 'Em High AKA Volume 2. The themes and controversial artistic statements became not only the Troma brand but also a film-making aesthetic that commanded its own category, the Tromatic.
Moderator Patricia Kaufman was the Film Commissioner for the state of New York for 19 years until her recent retirement, as well as the deputy commissioner of Empire State Development. Mrs. Kaufman served as President of the Association of Film Commissioners International from 2003-2007. She is currently producing Return to Return to Nuke 'Em High AKA Volume 2 alongside her husband, director Lloyd Kaufman, whom she has been married to since 1973.
Panelist Henry Zebrowski will represent the acting expert on the panel. Hailing from NBC's Heroes Reborn, the thirteen episode mini-series that was a continuation of the original television series Heroes. Zebrowski is also featured on The Characters, a sketch comedy show that premiered on Netflix on March 11, 2016. The show highlighted multiple artists whom would write and star in their individual episode of the program.
Panelist and Producer Rose Ganguzza is known as "The Godmother of young filmmakers". Ganguzza is recognized and lauded for working with first time filmmakers. She acted as Producer for award winning film Kill Your Darlings, a 2013 film directed by John Krokidas. Kill Your Darlings premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The story is about early members of the Beat Generation and the killing in Riverside Park in Manhattan. Ganguzza was also acting producer on Margin Call a 2011 film written and directed by J.C. Chandor. The story revolves around Wall Street and the beginnings of the financial crisis in 2008. Margin Call was also premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Singer/Songwriter and TromaDance panelist Alan Merrill, frontman of The Alan Merrill Band, is well known as the lyricist and musician behind "I Love Rock & Roll" a song famously recorded by Joan Jett & the Blackheart", originally in 1975 and still to this day! "I Love Rock & Roll" ranks #56 on Billboard charts of the greatest songs of all time.
Finally, panelist Ken Hanely is the editor-in-chief of Fangoria Magazine which Began in 1979. In 1985 it extended its reach to the public market with television, films, radio, and even comic books. It currently is distributed throughout the United States as well as internationally.
