Szumowska’s Body to open the 8th CinEast today

The 8th edition of CinEast (www.cineast.lu), the Central and Eastern European Film Festival in Luxembourg, starts today, Thursday 8 October, at 7 pm at the Neimënster cultural centre in Luxembourg with the screening of Malgorzata Szumowska’s Body (Silver Bear at Berlin IFF). The festival will present 57 features and over 40 short films from 18 post-communist countries as well as a variety of complementary events. The festival runs until 25 October.

The opening film is included in CinEast’s competition, together with Babai by Visar Morina, Family Film by Olmo Omerzu, In the Crosswind by Martti Helde, Self-Portrait of a Dutiful Daughter by Ana Lungu, Son of Saul by László Nemes and The Cleaner by Peter Bebjak. The International Jury is presided over by Andrzej Żuławski.

The opening ceremony will be preceded by the vernissage of the photography exhibition ‘Urban Stories’ (starting at 6 pm at the Cloister of Neimënster) curated by Jagna Olejnikowska, which brings together eight projects of photographers from Poland (Katarzyna Majak, Iza Łapińska, Zbyszko Siemaszko, Mateusz Grybczyński), Slovenia (Olja Stefanović Triaška), Slovakia (Roman Bezjak), Switzerland (Thomas Leuthard) and Luxembourg (Boris Loder). The presented works look at the city as a phenomenon of social organisation interwoven in a specific architectural context, which is continually changing over time. For more details, please see the festival’s website (photos here). After the last festival screening at Neimënster (24 Oct. 6.30 pm) most of the photos will be available for purchase with all the collected funds going to the festival’s Charity project.

Among the accompanying events of CinEast 2015: concert of the klezmer group Klezmafour and Balkan Party with DJ Kosta Kostov (Melusina 10/10), jazz concert of Wlodek Pawlik Trio (Neimënster 17/10), live soundtrack to the silent film An Old Gangster’s Molls by Neuvěřitelno (Cinémathèque 20/10), Closing Party with Sean&Zander and Freeborn Brothers (Sang&Klang 24/10) and many more (DJ events, debates, gastronomy events, special evenings, see Events for more details)
