The Grace Kelly biopic "Grace of Monaco" starring Nicole Kidman as the actress turned princess has not been well receieved by critics at this year's festival, although being the movie that kicked off the festivities. The film had reportedly been a subject of dispute between director Olivier Dahan ('La Vie En Rose') and The Weinstein Company over which cut was to be shown at the festival, with the director's cut ultimately prevailing. The response has been resoundingly negative.
According to Scott Founds of Variety, the film is "handsomely produced but dramatically inert" and that the script written by Arash Amel is "agonizingly airless and contrived". Richard Corliss of TIME commented that the film "is short on either juice or content" and that if it works at all it is because of "Kidman's commitment". Despite the widely negative response, some critics have found something good in Kidman's protrayal of Kelly. Geoffry Mcnab of The Independent says that Kidman "excels in a role in which she is called on to project glamour and suffering in equal measure". Although the critics were harsh, the Weinstein's reportedly will distribute it in the U.S. sometime this year.
