Cairo International Film FestivalThe Cairo International Film Festival has been the premier cultural event in Africa and the Middle East, serving as a bridge between the cultures of the world. It has been accorded category “A” status by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations FIAPF, putting it on the same footing as festivals in Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Montreal, San Sebastian, Karlovy Vary, Tokyo, Shanghai, Mar del Plata and Moscow.
The Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) is the oldest film festival in the Middle East. It was launched in 1976 by the writer-critic Kamal el Mallakh to enhance the role of Egypt in the world of cinema. Egypt has enjoyed a strong cinematic tradition since the art of filmmaking was first developed, in 1896.
The festival has hosted a spectrum of the world’s most famous actors, actresses and directors, who have participated either via the screening of their films, in symposiums, or as members of the jury.
The Cairo International Film Festival has introduced in the 36th edition, 3 parallel programs: "Horizons of New Arab Cinema","International Critic’s days for first or second features" and "Cinema of Tomorrow" in order to contribute towards the development of cinema culture and industry in Egypt and the Arab world.
In its 37th edition held from the 11th to the 20th of November 2015, the CIFF will carry out his mission to strengthen cultural relationships between countries through film. A Celebration for Omar Sharif at The Cairo International Film FestivalCairo International Film Festival announces that a major celebration will be set up on November 12, the day following the opening ceremony, to honor the work of the late Egyptian star Omar Sharif. In the morning, a press conference will be held, attended by a number of international and Egyptian artists, who have been working with Omar Sharif through his career. In addition, some of the most famous movies starring Omar Sharif will be screened, such as “Lawrence of Arabia” - the film that saw him shine for the first time in the world’s cinema and brought him an Oscar nomination and two Golden Globe Awards in 1963; “Doctor Zhivago” - for which he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in 1966; French movie “Monsieur Ibrahim” - for which he has been awarded by a Cesar (French equivalent to the Oscars) for Best actor. The festival administration also succeeded in getting a restored version of the French film “Goha“,directed by Jacques Baratier in 1958 and starring Omar Sharif along with Claudia Cardinale. The last movie in which Omar Sharif appeared in, Ahmed Salim’s “1001 Inventions and the World of Ibn Al-Haytham” - created to coincide with the United Nations campaign celebrating the International Year of Light operated by UNESCO - will also be screened. Moreover, the Festival will publish a book about Omar Sharif’s path in Egyptian and international cinema, edited by Mahmoud Qassem and written in both English and Arabic.
