ICAIC and Wanda Vision are proud to announce the selection of Fernando Pérez’s film, ÚLTIMOS DÍAS EN LA HABANA (Last days in Havana) at the forthcoming BERLIN FILM FESTIVAL which takes place from 9 to 19 February 2017. The film received the Special Jury Award and Best Soundtrack Award last December at the Havana Film Festival and will be screened in the Berlinale Special section.

Downtown Havana. The heart of Havana today. Miguel (45 years old) dreams of fleeing to New York. While he waits for his visa, which never seems to arrive, he works as a busboy at a paladar, a privately owned restaurant. Diego (45 years old) dreams of living. Weakened and immobilized by AIDS, Diego remains energetic on the narrow bed, in the smallest room of the house. Diego and Miguel live together as if they were night and day. While Miguel takes shelter, Diego opens himself to others. Diego is gay, positive, gleaming. Miguel is…what is Miguel ? A wide array of evocative characters surround the two friends but only Diego is aware of Miguel´s intentions. When his visa finally arrives, destiny has something in store for everyone as they face a surprising and unusual decision.

Director/writer Fernando Pérez has a Degree in Language and Hispanic Literature from the University of Havana. In 1987, he directed his first feature fiction film “Clandestino”. His film work has been awarded in competitions in national and foreign festivals. In 1982, was awarded the Casa de las Americas Prize in testimony genre for his book Corresponsales de Guerra (War Correspondents). He was chosen the most outstanding Cuban film director in the 90’s by the Cuban Film Press Association. His second feature film “Hello, Hemingway” was nominated to the Goya Award in 1990 as Best Iberian-American film and won the prize of the New York film critics. He was awarded the Goya Prize for “La Vida es Silbar” (Life is whistling) as Best 2000 Iberian-American film and the Sundance Institute Award. He was also awarded the Flaiano Prize to the Best Foreign Film exhibited in Italy. His film “Suite Havana” inaugurated the 2003 Festival of San Sebastian and was nominated to the Goya Award in the categories of Best Documentary and Best Iberian-American film.
