Marfa @ Animation Day In Cannes Catalog

A town on the borderlands of Texas. A place out of time. A desert where strange lights dance in the night sky. A mecca for lovers of minimalist art. A landscape of lost horses, freaks and food trucks. And then there’s the giant lemon.

His 2009 short film Codswallop was nominated for a BAFTA Film Award. His 2013 short film 365 saw him animating one second a day for the whole year. The film played internationally including at prestigious animation festivals Ottawa and Annecy.

Myles McLeod is an award-winning writer, poet and director and one half of The Brothers McLeod. He has developed animated shows for Disney, Dreamworks, Aardman Animations and the BBC. He has written over eighty broadcast episodes for TV. His short films include Phone Home, a short about the first phone call from Mars. His poems feature in the short films The Inverted Peak and Marfa.

Director Statement

In 2013 Greg McLeod, one half of filmmaking team the Brothers McLeod, travelled to the small Texan town of Marfa. He had a new animation project in mind. He was going to document his experiences of this remote town. He collected sounds, video footage and photos. He interviewed residents and visitors, noted down a few overheard conversations and recorded ambient sound effects and music.

On his return to the UK he shared his materials with brother Myles. They started to piece together a collage of voices and sounds and images. Myles wrote a poem based on the photos which formed the backbone of the film. Greg then launched into design. He experimented with several styles before settling on a hand drawn ink-on-paper treatment based on his continuing instagram project ‘myinkyhead’. Once principal animation started it took a year to complete the 8 minute 30 second film.
