"Spectacular" - The New York Times

Two young men who have grown up together betroth their unborn children, ignoring the advice of a mysterious traveler not to pledge the lives of future generations. Years later, one father forgets his vow and betroths his daughter to a rich suitor. Along comes the friend's son, but he and the others are unaware of the promised union. The girl and the boy fall in love, and when marriage proves impossible, he invokes mystic evil forces that kill him. His ghost and his voice, however, seize the young bride on her wedding day.

Tevye The Dairyman has been the first Non-English Language Film to have been deemed "culturally significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in 1991.

Tevye the Dairyman’s daughter falls in love with Fedye, the son of a Ukrainian peasant. Her courtship and marriage pit Tevye’s love for his daughter against his faith and loyalty to tradition.

The original, non-musical film version of the book which inspired Fiddler on the Roof.

1936 / Poland / documentary / 65' / Polish, Yiddish

A rare record of Jewish life in Poland before World War II, the film was produced as an international fundraiser for the Medem Sanatorium near Warsaw, a clinic sponsored by the General Union of Jewish Workers that provided care and an escape from urban poverty for some 10,000 children between 1926 and 1939. The film follows three children as they gradually overcome their emotional withdrawal and distrust and enter the communal life of the institution.
