The Promised Land: The Return

by Aleksandr Rechwiaschwili

"Why, at the end of the 20th century, when Russia is having difficulties, should a group of film-makers devote a film to Palestine?" asked the production team of this compilation of previously unseen footage documenting the Russian emigration to Palestine and the birth of the state of Israel.

Answering the question, the film functions "not only as a sad farewell and intensive reflection... but also as a glance to the future."

The film begins with shots of a bustling Palestinian coastal city at the beginning of the last century, and presents historical archive footage of the Nazi persecution of Jews, British negotiations and military rule, the settlement of kibbutzim and everyday life in the 'promised land' without narration, accompanied only by Mark Minkov's Klezmer-esque score. Title cards supply contextual information.

This is a remarkable audiovisual document of a historical milestone whose repercussions still resonate today.
