The Spring of Life

by Milan Cieslar

Marta Körnerová, who has headed up Filmexport Prague for the past 40 years, has certainly toured the international market circuit before. But at Berlinale 2000, for the first time ever she is accompanied by her husband, Vladimír Körner in his capacity of scriptwriter for the Panorama entry, Pramen Zivota (The Spring Of Life), which she represents in the European Film Market.

Körner's story for Czech director Milan Cieslar's Pramen Zivota which unspools in Berlin on Wednesday, 16 February is set against the backdrop of Operation Lebensborn, the Nazi programme for creating an Aryan master race by carefully selecting young women and bringing them together with SS elite soldiers for the sole purpose of breeding. It follows the love story of a Czech girl and a Jewish boy.
