Zai Jian A-Lang

by Johnny To

Championed by local critics for his undaunted efforts to keep popular genre film-making alive and kicking in the faltering Hong Kong film industry, Johnny To has become one of the most active and enterprising producer/directors in the territory.

Where A Good Man Goes re-teams him with his favourite actor, Lau Ching-Wan, in a Shane-like story of a paroled convict forming an unexpected bond with a single parent (Ruby Wong) and her young son.

The story unfolds in Macau, until recently a real-life gangsters' paradise, which makes it depressingly plausible that this man's awkward attempts to rediscover his own humanity should be compromised by the proximity of assorted criminal associates and low-lifes. The going, in short, gets rough.
