"Aware
that people living in indistinct
times need a myth, Wojaczek
fed his legend with the trivial
reality of socialist Poland," says
Polish director Lech
Majewski, represented in
the Forum by his portrait of Polish
rebel poet Wojaczek, who died in
1971 at the age of 26.
"I
still remember reading his obituary.
I was shocked, but also fascinated
at this person who both metaphorically
and physically walked through
windows. I read all his poetry,
and his fearlessness made a deep
impact. It was in his life and in
his poetry, and we were in an oppressed
country."
Wojaczek
is Majewski's second portrait of
a controversial figure from the
1960s, after Basquiat, which he
wrote and co-produced. A Lodz graduate,
living in the US since 1981, Majewski
has published poetry and novels,
and has written and staged award-winning
plays and operas. His film credits
include Prisoner Of Rio,
about the Great Train Robbery.
