Pen-ek
Ratanaruang's black comedy-thriller 6ixty-nin9 could
have been called Marion Crane Fights Back. If the
anti-heroine of Psycho had lived in
Bangkok and had killed Norman Bates before he got
her, then Hitchcock's classic could well have turned
out something like this.
The
day after Tum (top Thai star Lalita Panyopas) loses
her job because the bank is "downsizing",
she finds a cardboard box stuffed with banknotes
on her doorstep. One forged passport, one ticket
to London and several burly corpses later, she's
ready to kiss her old life goodbye, but events take
several unexpected turns.
Twisting
genre expectations inside-out, Pen-ek delivers a
series of visual and narrative surprises which add
up to a rather scathing account of present-day Thai
society.
