Ever
since Bumming
In Beijing established him as China's
foremost independent documentary maker,
Wu Wenguang has pursued parallel careers:
one as a maker of film and video studies
of artists and other self-employed people
in the New China; the other as an actor/director
in experimental theatre.
Jiang
Hu (literally 'rivers and lakes', although
the phrase denotes a subcultural underworld)
spans the two poles of his career. It shows
a troupe of former peasant farmers who have
abandoned their fields to try to earn money
with a travelling variety show. Their performances
offer little more than songs and girls dancing
in skimpy clothes.
