Norae Ro Taeyang Ul Ssoda

by Choi Jai-Hong

Norae Ro Taeyang Ul Ssoda (which translates as Shoot The Sun By Lyric, referring to the Korean myth of a monk who charmed a second sun out of the sky by singing at it) documents the campaign which mobilised the entire Korean film industry in 1999.

Although most areas of the Korean film industry have been deregulated in the last decade, a screen quota system remains in place, guaranteeing Korean films between 106 and 146 days a year on each screen in the country. Jack Valenti and the MPAA want to abolish or at least reduce this quota and Korea's film-makers have rallied to defend it.

Choi Jai-Hong's film shows every stage of the campaign, from the initial demonstrations and the hunger strike outside Myungdong Cathedral to the symbolic shaving of heads by directors including the grand old man of Korean cinema, Im Kwon-Taek. Everyone who still believes in cultural diversity should see it.
