Homesick

by Hineki Mito

Named after a Magritte painting, Hineki Mito's hour-long film looks at times like a ghost story and at times like a Kaurismaki-style exercise in comic miserabilism.

Somewhere in deepest, desolate Hokkaido, the elderly Nakamura, possibly the slowest driver in the world, picks up Akemi, a young woman just ditched by her boyfriend. They meet a suicidal ex-cop and a woman running away with a bankroll. Reminiscences
are shared, lies are told and new hopes are born.

Smart and unpredictable, Mito's film (his longest to date after making some attention-grabbing shorts) might best be summed up as a chamber road movie.
