Litter on the Breeze - First Love

by Eric Kot

Chaotic, shambolic and frequently very endearing, this debut feature by actor-disc jockey Eric Kot is ultimately an act of self-abasement on the altar of Wong Kar-Wai. It was Wong who suggested that Kot should try directing, suggested the topic of 'first love', and produced the film. Kot signed up a glamorous cast Takeshi Kaneshiro, Karen Mok, Li Wei-Wei and himself and began toying with stories which might lead him to some truths about his subject.

But the first four of these stories are abandoned or revised long before they reach their climaxes, and there are so many directorial interventions that the film turns into a self-reflexive dialogue between the author and his text. Only the fifth story an urban remake-parody of Wong Kar-Wai's Ashes Of Time, complete with draughts of Oblivion Wine and fateful showdowns is pushed to a conclusion. Almost all of it, though, is funny.
