Competition

The Talented Mr. Ripley
by Anthony Minghella

Haven't we all dreamed of being somebody else, assuming the identity of somebody rich or powerful or just better looking? Director Anthony Minghella's filming of Patricia Highsmith's 1950s novel has provided Oscar-winner Matt Damon with the plum role of a lavishly complicated rogue.

Also in competition today is Goutte d'eau sur pierres brulantes (Water Drops on Burning Rocks). Ozon pays tribute to one of Europe's greatest auteurs. Fassbinder's play, which he wrote aged 19 but never let be performed, tells of the blooming romance between businessman Leopold and naïve, considerably younger Franz.

Special Screening: Pia Liang Ma Ma (Breaking The Silence) honours the film's star, Gong Li, president of the Berlinale jury.

Leomania

Question after question was lobbed in Leo's direction, but there was hardly a peep from anybody else. At one stage, festival director Moritz de Hadeln took the microphone in a forlorn attempt to remind the press that this wasn't a "private press conference" for the star but to no avail.
