Competition

Any Given Sunday
by Oliver Stone

At the Golden Globes, Jim Carrey made no effort to mask his disappointment at winning the Best Actor in a Comedy award he would have rather won for Best Dramatic Actor. Not only is his performance in The Man on the Moon as Andy Kaufman , the stand-up comic, brilliant, but Carrey also conveys the character's tragic side.

Also in competition: La Chambre des Magiciennes
When the ARTE TV network offered director Claude Miller the opportunity to make a film for the Petites Caméras series, he jumped at the chance. With a small team, two digital cameras and a generous shooting schedule he could finally fulfill a longtime wish adapting Siri Hustvedt's novel, "The Blindfold."

And homage screening: Dora-Heita
K
on Ichikawa's 74th film one of the most pleasurable experiences to be had anywhere in this year's Berlinale should have been made 30 years ago.
His partners were Akira Kurosawa, Masaki Kobayashi and Keisuke Kinoshita, all now dead. Dora-Heita was written by all of them and intended as a collective project.

Berlinale birthday boy

Last time Milos Forman was at the Berlinale, he won a Golden Bear. This year, Oscar nominations (or the lack of them) were preying on the veteran Czech director's mind. He professed "shock" that Jim Carrey's performance as comedian Andy Kaufman in Man On The Moon had been overlooked by the Academy.
