At
the Golden Globes, Jim Carrey made
no effort to mask his disappointment
at winning the Best Actor in a Comedy
award he would have rather
won for Best Dramatic Actor. And he
certainly wouldn't have been happy
about being overlooked altogether
when the Oscar nominations were announced
a couple of days ago.
And
justifiably so. Not only is his performance
as Andy Kaufman, the stand-up comic,
brilliant, but Carrey also conveys
the character's tragic side.
Kaufman
was a wonderfully bizarre comic
whose kamikaze style provoked the
audience and tested the limits of
what is funny. He became famous
through the TV shows "Saturday
Night Live" and "Taxi"
before his untimely death from cancer.
The role not only challenges Carrey's
sense of timing, but also his transformation
abilities.
"He
lived his characters," comments Carrey
of Kaufman's schizophrenia. "You either
thought he had gone totally bonkers
or that he had really become another
character."
