Everything
about Gabrielle is shocking pink
her cheeks, her polka-dotted smock, her
feather boa, even her last name, Rose.
Even
the opening credits are in her favourite
colours, while she dances merrily to Johnny
Hallyday singing 'Heartbreak Hotel', flirting
shamelessly with the camera.
Since
To Have (Or Have Not) in
the 1996 Forum, Laetitia Masson has managed
to tackle a new challenge with every film
and still remain true to herself. Love Me,
the last installment of a trilogy about
work and love, is another brave change of
direction. Masson has created a fascinating
puzzle, which dances between time and reality
levels and follows a dreamlike logic.
Sandrine
Kiberlain gives Gabrielle a fetching screen
presence, while Hallyday makes a glorious
screen comeback as a burned-out rock star.
In passing, Masson has fulfilled her cinematic
dreams of America, film noir and rock
'n'roll in CinemaScope and larger
than life.
