The Competition: Mayis Sikintisi (Clouds of May)

Clouds of May

Mayis Sikintisiby Nuri Bilge Ceylan

Nuri Bilge Ceyan, the Turkish director of Clouds Of May, is no stranger to Berlin. His feature debut, Kasaba (based on his sister Emine's autobiography, The Cornfield), was a 1998 Forum Caligari Prize-winner. The new film also takes place in Anatolia, but the placid rural rhythms of Kasaba are more menacing in Clouds Of May.

An old man (Mehmet Emin Ceylan in a magnificent performance) struggles to save a forest from being cut down.

Ceylan, in addition to directing and writing the film, also shot and designed this character-driven piece, exploring their faces and thus their hearts. The kaleidoscope of images he captures a child's smile, an old woman's still beautiful face, palpable heat over a meadow form the basis of a fascinating meditation about generation conflicts, social change, loss of innocence and the meaning of life, no less, while the camera follows leaves dancing in the summer wind.
