The Competition: Russkij Bunt (The Captain's Daughter)

The Captain's Daughter

Russkij Buntby Aleksandr Proshkin

After a career as a prolific television director, Aleksandr Proshkin made his debut as a cinema director in his late 40s with The Cold Summer Of 1953 (1988), an 'Eastern' about a loner battling criminals released from labour camps upon the deaths of Stalin and Beria, which was hailed as one of the major 'perestroika' films. Now, in The Captain's Daughter, Proshkin has adapted Aleksandr Puschkin's 1836 epic novel of the same name.

The film tells the story of rebellious peasant leader Pugacev, as seen through the eyes of Grinev, an aristocratic soldier. Their paths first cross when Grinev, on his way to the fortress of Belogorsk, gives a peasant a fur robe. As it happens, the man is Pugacev, who will later storm the fortress. Remembering his kindness, Pugacev allows Grinev to go unscathed, but he must leave his great love, captain's daughter Masha, in the hands of the traitors.
