The
search for paradise is one of the great themes of world
literature. From "The Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe"
to "Gilligan's Island," authors and film-makers
have been intrigued by characters searching for untrampled
isles of golden sunshine, crystal waters and stretches
of pristine beach. Inevitably, though, there's a downside...
The
search for such an ideal place drives a disconnected
young drifter in The Beach. Richard (Leonardo
DiCaprio) meets other rootless adventurers in a Bangkok
hotel. One stranger talks of a secret island and leaves
a map of its probable location. Richard talks a French
couple into joining him. Risking life and limb, they
eventually reach their paradise and discover a secret
community of like-minded settlers.
The
idyll is short-lived. Richard soon finds himself enmeshed
in feuds, petty jealousies and even bloodshed
and finds that he may not be able to leave.

Hodge the team responsible for Trainspotting
director Danny Boyle describes the Alex Garland
novel upon which the film is based as "a wonderful parable
of modern life that nature isn't something we
can just waltz into and develop to our taste."
