Little known outside of South Africa, Cecil Williams was an established, accomplished white gay man who joined the struggle against apartheid. Acting as a wealthy traveller with Mandela ostensibly as his chauffeur, the wanted black leader was able to move undetected throughout South Africa for several months attending party meetings and organising anti-government activities.
