Beatniks, Hippies, Flower
Power, LSD, Make Love, Not War... It's another trip down Memory Lane
as the roots of American counter-culture are once more analysed and
interpreted. The usual suspects: Ginsberg, Kerouac, Cassady, Leary,
Burroughs et al are all duly represented with archival footage, contemporary
interviews, and the recollections of friends and fans. Even actors Johnny
Depp, Dennis Hopper and John Turturro get in on the act by giving dramatic
readings of some of the celebrated writers' words. The Source examines
the near half century of influence that the Beat movement has spawned
in arts, politics, society and culture. Oscar-winning director Chuck
Workman culled some 200 sources as well as shooting original material.
"This is a film about writers," he says. "I wanted to show the wealth
of literature that the Beats created." Owen Levy
