It doesn't matter whether
you live in Tel Aviv, Lille, Cologne or Seattle - the urban feelings
of the Israeli city-dwellers in Jonathan Sagall's feature directing
debut are less geographically than emotionally anchored in a global
late 1990s zeitgeist.
Eva (Dafna Rechter) and Robbi
(Scharonn Alexander) are trapped in a by turns frustrating and boring
marriage. Then Eva's childhood sweetheart Emanuel (Jonathan Sagall)
turns the dreary idyll inside out, catalyzing a catharsis. The spark
returns: Robbi has an affair with the shambolic Neli (Asi Levy), a lonely
hearts column regular. Eva lands in an anonymous sex club after an erotic
encounter with Emanuel. And Eva's young son finally begins to defend
himself against bullies. Maybe Emanuel, not Robbi, is his father?
This is an amusing but deeply felt film about postmodern enlightened
mankind's dream that love is more than a hormonally induced sensation.
Sharp dialogue and bittersweet comedy put this self-mocking big city
burlesque bang on the mark.
