Scouting in Berlin's Crossover Market

Noticing that documentaries take up more of the festival programme - and the market schedule - at Berlin than they do at any other major festival, Amsterdam-based Barbara Truyen has been busy working the floor with her new liaison package.

BT Agency, her new company, was set up, she says, "because of all the frustrations both for buyers -who say they spend 70% of their time telling people what they don't want to buy - and for documentary producers, who sometimes don't even get an answer when they approach TV stations".

Truyen approaches the problem from both sides, providing all kinds of advice packages for producers, covering anything from budgeting and market potential up to acting as a producer's representative (though not a sales agent) at various festivals and markets. For time-pressed acquisitions execs, she will track future product from the pre-production stage right through to putting together packages of documentaries for possible thematic evenings.

"Berlin is the only crossover market for documentaries and features," says Truyen. "It's a great place to scout." NR
