Asked about the importance of festival prizes (he's sat on dozens of festival juries world-wide), he says: "It is not always the best movies which are the winners." So what does he look for in a film? "I always try to find the emotion. I don't remember titles but I can remember scenes that touch me."

The future of European film upsets him. "Europeans are completely disorganised and they have to get back together. We have to start thinking and talking in terms of European-wide distribution," he says. He also feels that Latin America and China are vastly under-tapped markets important for European product, and reckons European distributors don't defend their own product, especially in competition with American films. "If we lose this battle there will be only one way of life," he declares. "The world for me is starting to be like a novel from George Orwell. We have to discover that there is not only one truth but millions of different ones." Owen Levy |
