BV's first contracts at Berlin

BV International Pictures the international sales company launched last year by Norwegian distributor Bjørg Veland of BV Film, and UK sales executive Heather Playford-Denman, who was at that time with Film Four International - has picked up Swedish director Kjell Sundvall's Kontraktet (The Last Contract), about the assassination of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme.

The 28 February 1986 as yet unsolved slaying of Palme has fuelled as many conspiracy theories as the murder of John F Kennedy 23 years before. Directed by Swedish director Kjeld Sundvall, who signed the most recent local blockbuster, Jägarna (The Hunters), the film is based on a book by UK author John W Grow, The Ultimate Contract, which will be marketed to coincide with the release of the film.

According to publisher Bjarne Sellin, the film will present all known facts of the murder, and will come to a conclusion with the help of a little "artistic licence".

Mats Arehn, Johan Bogaeus and producer Börje Hansson share the credit for the screenplay, which was realised by Sweden's FilmLance International with Finland's Kinoproduction and Norway's Yellow Cottage, supported by Eurimages. Mikael Persbrandt (Beck) and Michael Kitchen play the leads.

Representing BV International Pictures at the Berlinale for the first time, Veland and Playford-Denman are touting Erik Gustavson's Weekend, a thriller written by Gustavson and Arne Berggren. The film is about a young couple, high on cocaine, breaking in to party at a doctor's home. As the family returns, the youngsters steal their car not knowing that their nine-year-old daughter is still sleeping on the back seat.

The director of the Berlin competition entry, Telegrafisten (The Telegraphist) - considered the first slender notice that a new generation of filmmakers was taking over Norwegian Cinema Gustavson will next bring Jostein Gaarder's international bestseller, Sofies verden (Sofie's World), to the big screen.

BV International Pictures is also screening Algerian-Dutch director Karim Traïda's De Poolse bruid (The Polish Bride), which won the audience award at this year's Rotterdam International Film Festival. The film depicts the love story between a Dutch farmer and a Polish woman, lured to Holland under false pretences. JRJ
