Basquiat producer and writer Lech Majewski has joined forces with former
DEFA screenwriter Thomas Knauf to produce a feature film based on the life
and times of legendary German painter Joseph Beuys entitled simply Beuys.
They announced the project at the Berlinale yesterday.
Majewski, who shot to fame following his production (and screenplay)
of Basquiat, is also known for his Ronald Biggs biopic Prisoner of Rio.
Beuys, a former Stuka pilot in the Second World War who was shot down in the Crimea, saved by Tartar nomads, ended his war career on the Western front, and died in 1986, has never had a fictional piece made about his life, nor any major documentary.
"The film will shoot in Germany, Venice and Russia," said screenwriter/producer
Thomas Knauf, who has been responsible for scripts on films like Michael
Gwisdek's Treffen in Travers, The Architect and The Trail of the Amber
Room, "and we are currently looking for co-producers both in Europe and
the US."
Majewski's New York based Lech Majewski Enterprises (LME) will produce.
