Danish director Lars von Trier's most commercial venture yet, Taps - the musical - will shoot next spring in Germany and Sweden, with locations in Washington, as a Scandinavian-German-French co-production for Denmark's Zentropa Productions.
After meetings in Berlin, producers Vibeke Windeløv and Peter Aalbæk Jensen have concluded the financial strategy for the $13-15 million project, which constitutes part three of his 'Golden Heart' trilogy, after Breaking the Waves and Idioterne (The Idiots).
"Von Trier is currently rewriting the script, after we have decided the composer and the lead characters," said Windeløv, who is packaging the project with Trust (Stockholm), Pain Unlimited (Cologne) and Liberator (Paris).
Zentropa has raised $1 million for the development of Taps, which follows an East European girl arriving in Washington with her child to pursue the American Dream. Reality does not always match her fantasies, but it never becomes an obstacle.
"The name of von Trier seems to open most wallets - financing the musical has not been much of a problem," added Windeløv, who has attached Good Machine to the project, handling US rights and assisting on the American leg of the operation.
Having delivered Idioterne - the story of a group of young people who share one interest: idiocy - on a $2.4 million budget, von Trier has this week (16 February) started Morten Korch - en tv serie (Morten Korch - A TV series) for Denmark's TV2.
Von Trier will produce the 26 episodes, with Henrik Sartou and Finn Henriksen directing.
