Mar del Plata

The Mar del Plata film festival is undergoing a revamp, according to festival president Julio Maharbiz. The event, which has been cancelled in previous years (a victim of Argentina's fiery politics) has been under Maharbiz' direction since 1996.

Already Maharbiz has introduced a market to the festival (in 1997), started to tighten the structure by reducing the number of film sections and begun negotiations with private investors. Catching the attention of the international media is the next step.

"I want Mar del Plata to be one of the big festivals in the world," Maharbiz enthuses, "but I also want it to give Latin American cinema the chance to screen in Europe and America."

While the festival dates - 12-21 November - are tricky, running almost immediately after the important Mifed market, Mahabiz seems undaunted. "I am putting all my will and energy into rejuvenating this festival," he says. "We are the only competitive festival in Latin America. We are unique."
