German sales success

It's been a crucial year for German sales companies with business at the German end of the market appearing a lot rosier than just a year back. "For us the market has gone very well," said Michael Weber of Bavaria International.
Bavaria has made inroads into Britain, coming to an agreement with cinema operators City Screen Limited, which will release Wolfgang Becker's Life is All You Get in July. "We are talking about 30 cities," said Weber. The deal will likely extend to three pictures with Caroline Link's Beyond Silence also on the cards.
Weber also confirmed that Miramax has taken all rights for North America, plus remake rights, to Beyond Silence. Also, Russia picked up Beyond Silence and Rossini (all rights) as well as Little Angel and Life is All You Get for television and video. Mexico took Beyond Silence as well as Bandits (theatrical) and Rossini, Life is All You Get, Hunger and Rudy the Racing Pig (video and television).
Dieter Menz at Atlas acknowledged a healthy interest in Der Campus and confirmed Ballermann 6 went to several territories, including Spain, before the market.
Over at Cine-International, sales included: George Sluizer's The Vanishing to the USA (Bravo, TV) and all rights to Kristin Lavransdatter to the US. All rights to Werner Herzog's Scream of Stone went to Poland, while Japan took television and video rights to a Voelker Schloendorff package.
Alexander van Dulmen at Progress was upbeat about the market. Progress has taken Peter Lichterfeld's Train Birds into sales and picked up Wolfgang Bueld's Drop Out for distribution here.
Van Dulmen said that sales had been made for competition film Das Mambospiel and Die Apothekerin. "Successful movies like Knockin' on Heaven's Door (above) and the Oscar nomination have definitely changed the situation here and are good for the whole industry," he said.
