Scheduled between 20 and 26 November in Manila, 1998, the second Philippine
International Film Festival (PIFF) will focus on European Cinema, according
to newly-appointed festival director Evelyn Vargas-Knaebel.
Growing out of The World Cinema Centennial Celebration, a one-off event
staged two years ago in Manila by the Mowelfund Film Institute, the festival
is now organised by a foundation as "a venue for art and cultural exchange",
subsidised by the state.
Moving from the Philippine media centre, Quezon City, which hosted
the first festival programme, the second PIFF will comprise a main programme
of Filipino and foreign films, highlighting European product. The main
theatre will be the SM Megamall Cinema.
Sidebars include a selection of first features, award-winning titles
from developing countries, films for children and youth audiences, and
retrospectives. The festival will also set up a minor-scale film market.
As 1998 marks the centennial of Philippine independence, Vargas-Knaebel
and festival president Joseph Javier will mount a touring showcase, screening
parts of the programme in other provinces of the country.
