Thompson's career takes an upward spiral
Every actor dreams of having a part written for them. Anna Thompson's dream came true. Director Amos Kollek created Sue, a quirky story about a single woman whose precarious life takes a sharp downward spiral, for the New York-born actress. Sue screens in Panorama.
Originally Thompson had auditioned for another proposed Kollek film but when she returned on a callback the director presented her with an entirely different script. "I wrote this thing for you," he told her. She read it and her reaction was: "It's perfect for me!"
The part called for lots of nudity and some very specific sex acts but Thompson has no problem with that.
"I do a lot of nudity," she says evenly. "I think if you're not going to be completely fearless and jump into the movie then why bother?"
Thompson began her career as a ballet dancer, worked briefly as a stripper and now works steadily in film. Besides Sue she is featured in two other films at this year's Berlinale.
Thompson, a fragile blonde with a sensual mouth, sloe eyes and impressive cleavage, recently completed a new film with French comedian Elie Semoun and Burt Reynolds. She also has a new project with Kollek coming up. "It has more sex and more nudity and more drugs," she says rather matter of factly. Owen Levy
