Competition
Jackie Brown
Three years lay between his ground-breaking Pulp Fiction (1994)
and Jackie Brown - and director Quentin Tarantino hasn't lost his bite.
On the contrary: his adaption of Elmore Leonard's Rum Punch (1992) is chock
full with action, humour, smart dialogue and exceptional actors (led by
70s action-babe icon Pam Grier). Stewardess Jackie Brown (Grier) is arrested
by the LAPD and AFT agent Nicolet (Michael Keaton) because of money-smuggling
and cocaine deliveries to drug baron Ordell (Samuel L Jackson). Ordell,
who is in tow with the fading surfer beauty Melanie (Bridget Fonda) and
prefers spending his time with buddy Louis (Robert De Niro) watching chicks-with-guns
videos, orders Max Cherry (Robert Forster) to get her out of prison on
bail - in order to kill her before she can give any further testimony
With an assured hand, Tarantino contrasts the gentle love between Jackie
and Max with the autopilot sex performed by Melanie and Louis (as the caption
has it: "3 minutes later ") and scenes of brutal violence.
With touching tenderness the director tackles the problem of Jackie's ageing; her smile
is the visual equivalent of the Delfonics music of the soundtrack - beautiful
and timeless. A film full of wild elegance.
