Saul Zaentz, who looks as bearded and fiery as any Old Testament prophet, is not a producer to mess with. During Sunday's press conference for The English Patient, a grateful Anthony Minghella likened him to a bull patrolling the perimeter of the film at all times, keeping away his enemies and protecting his friends.
While he is a formidable bulwark against front-office interference, Zaentz, whose credits include One Flew Over The Cuckoo Nest and Amadeus, admitted that he isn't always an efficient housekeeper. On-the-budget is a word unknown to me.
Zaentz and Minghella want to work together again. We're desperately reading and looking for projects, said Zaentz, but they are not accepting scripts and won't embark on any venture unless both are impassioned about it. So it doesn't look as if either are aiming for an immediate cash-in on The English Patient's success.
English Patient co-star Willem Dafoe announced that after Speed 2 and Paul Schrader's Affliction, he will be returning to experimental theatre outfit, The Wooster Group, with whom he has been associated for well over a decade.
