budget, rites-of-passage yarn, The Girl in the Watermelon, hasn't enjoyed anything like the cross-over success of its Sundance siblings, films like The Spitfire Grill, The Brothers McMullen and Welcome to the Dollhouse. But its genial producer, Andrew Louca, who financed the film himself (“You can't get more independent than that”) and has accompanied it to its Berlin market screenings on the 18th and 22nd, still regards it with affection - after all, it is his first (and thus far) only feature-length film production. Back in New York, he is best known for his off-off Broadway productions of plays by Brecht and Pirandello. He is eager to get back into film production, but “only if the right kind of character-driven part comes along”.
