Brit Baillie Walsh was researching his first feature and ended up making a documentary. Walsh got a deal from the France's Première Heure.
He discovered Consuela Cosmetic in a New York drag bar and when he went to write the script used her stories as a source. Soon Consuela was not only helping to write the script but was to play a character called Hope.
Catherine Deneuve and Carrie Fischer were already cast. But when Walsh got back to NY to begin pre-production Consuela was sick. 'I said to the production company I really feel she should be filmed. 'Consuela was not another drag queen. She was willing to show the harsh underbelly - the truth about the drag scene.' Walsh filmed Aids-infected Consuela during the waning days of her life. The result is Mirror Mirror, one of the surprise hits of he Panorama. Owen Levy
