US buyers home in on festivals

Rotterdam, Locarno and Edinburgh Festivals are increasingly important dates in the festival circuit for US buyers, said Thomas Garvin, chair of a panel discussion on accessing the US market organised by the European Film Academy.

Garvin, a US executive producer and lawyer, also highlighted smaller US festivals for building interest from US buyers, citing the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York for first and second runs and the Telluride Festival, Colorado. He stressed the need for foreign language titles to secure reviews through festivals if they were seeking US distribution.

Strand Releasing co-president Jon Gerran concurred: 'The best place for a buyer to sit is behind the critics. If they walk out, you forget it, if they love it and start clapping, you run out and find the sales agent. It's true - I've done it.'
