MK2 ups English

French production, sales and distribution outfit MK2 is to produce or co-produce up to three English-language titles a year.

MK2's first ever US-shot features are Alexandre Rockwell's Louis & Frank, a co-production with Why Not Production that has just wrapped in New York and features Steve Buscemi and Tony Curtis, and an as yet untitled drama that rolls in the US next month with MK2 producing, Lodge Kerrigan directing and Katrin Cartlidge, Vincent D'Onofrio and Colm Meany starring. MK2 takes world rights to both productions, which are budgeted between US$1.5 and US$2 million.

MK2's head of sales Sophie Bourdon explained the move was partly due to the death of regular MK2 director Krzysztof Kieslowski last year: 'We needed to find another regular source,' she said. 'Looking at the market, English language is obvioulsy much easier to sell now, so we decided to get involved on a regular basis with US independent filmmakers.'

MK2 is also co-producing Claude Chabrol's Rien ne va plus with Switzerland's Cab Productions and selling Abbas Kiarostami's latest production, which shoots in Spring in Iran. AM
