Mosfilm comes out on top

Some five years ago, Vladimir Dostal, general director of Mosfilm, was afraid that his studios would not even be able to pay the bills for heating and electricity. But by discharging one third of its employees, renting out part of its buildings and by servicing a number of TV channels, the studio managed to improve its situation.

Today, some six to 10 teams from the US and Europe do their shooting at Mosfilm every year.

Despite an increase in prices, the studio has been able to keep clients because of the excellent facilities it offers. 'Nowadays, we have more money in our bank account than all the other Russian companies in the film industry together,' said Dostal. 'Last year, we received 30% of our budget from the state,' adds Nikolai Filatov, head of Mosfilm International. With the help of Italian investors, this should be enough to continue the technical modernisation of the studio.

Mosfilm has brought 2,500 films to the EFM, among them The Small Cat (screening in the children's competition) and Eldar Ryazanov's Hello, Funny Ones. Yevgeniya Tirdatova
