Danish producer Per Holst (born 1939) is one of the few producers in the world who has scored the Golden Grand Slam, bagging the Palme d'Or, the Golden Globe and the Foreign-language Academy Award for the same film - Bille August's Pelle Erobreren (Pelle The Conqueror/1988).
A veteran of Danish film production, Holst started his career directing commercials, and he has since had irregular relapses into the director's chair. His 1985 feature, Op pa fars hat (Up on Daddy's Hat), exceeded one million domestic admissions.
With a third eye for new talent, he has introduced such filmmakers as August, Nils Malmros, Helle Ryslinge, Morten Arnfred and Lars von Trier to the big screen. He is readying Malmros' Barbara for a late 1997 launch.
"You are an idiot if you don't listen to what he is saying. But you are also an idiot if you do everything he asks you to," Malmros once explained. Jrn Rossing Jensen
