The Berlin government will today announce an agreement with Sony Entertainment to save the beleaguered cineplex at Potsdamer Platz, a mooted venue for the Berlin International Film Festival.
Berlin is understood to have improved rental contributions for the so-called 'Filmhaus Potsdamer Platz' and may foot major building costs. Set to open in 2001, a year after the 50th anniversary of the Berlinale, the 17,000m2 site will house the Filmhaus plus a host of other facilities including: the archive foundation, the Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek; the German Film and Television Academy Berlin; Europe's biggest film library; and a Film Museum that will showcase the Marlene Dietrich Collection. The agreement follows speculation that work on the Filmhaus would not be completed. Berlin was to pay up to DM191 (US$127.3) million rent over 25 years but the socialist party, SPD, refused to release DM24.5 (US$16.3) million from Laender coffers for work on the interior. Adam Minns
