Maggie Cheung

"I was invited to present three films in the Forum in 1991 - my first film festival," recalls lively Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung (right). "It was very cold and wet. I did some interviews and went to the Zoo, but I didn't really know how a festival ran. Now, this is my first time on a jury, and it's the best position to be in at a film festival! I don't mean because of any power, but just because my duty is only to

see such a range of new films and I don't have to do any interviews!"

Cheung is also to be seen in two films premiering at the Berlinale. "They are the last two Hong Kong films I've made. In The Soong Sisters, I play the middle sister who married the 'Godfather' of China - the others married the richest man in China and Chiang-Kai-Chek, so it was some family! We shot in 1995, and the second one had a long production last year. Comrades - Almost a Love Story," - also being shown in the Panorama - "is set in the 1980s and is about a boy and a girl going to Hong Kong and trying to start a life there. I live there and I think our film industry will grow into something bigger after the handover, especially if we make our films in Mandarin rather than Cantonese. I'm actually on 'holiday' from Wayne Wang's film, which is about the departure of the British." Phillip Bergson
