Figures released by the German Federal Film Board show an all-time high in box office takings - more than DM1.3 billion, 11% up on 1995.
It was thus poetic that the meeting between former French minister Jack Lang and German Minister of the Interior Manfred Kanther, accompanied by festival chief Moritz de Hadeln, which took place at the Unifrance stand yesterday, should coincide with the jostling for top box-office position between France and Germany.
With a market share of 16%, German film on its own turf has rediscovered an audience, with 20 million viewers in 1996, almost double the previous year's amount.
A slight downswing at the end of 1996, is not, says the FFA, a cause for concern, merely the result of an intense period of new releases. The number of organisations running theatres went from 1,223 to 1,300, with a minor reduction in the number of cinemas and an increase in the number of screens of 100. Mike Downey
