One of the wittier short films of the 1988 Berlinale was Phillip B Roth's very personal Boys/Life, which contrasted porno footage and explicit personal narrative with man-on-the-street interviews.
His 1991 video, 25 Year Old Gay Man Loses His Virginity To A Woman, continued the tradition of Roth's wry, slightly askew, takes on his sexual development. Now perhaps comes the piece de resistance of his swelling oeuvre: I Was A Jewish Sex Worker, which evolved from his own lucrative career as an erotic masseur.
Incorporating actual footage of Roth manipulating clients, interspersed with interviews featuring his own family, and reenactments of his teenage sexual awakenings, this latest installment of Roth's autobiographical musings promises to once again be an unforgettable voyeuristic voyage. 'It is like a kind of therapy to work out my life in an art form,' says Roth. He even seduced German film bad boy Rosa von Praunheim - a former lover whom he credits with having a strong influence on his style - into a cameo appearance. His 81-year-old grandmother Sylvia Eisen, and buxom wonder Annie Sprinkle are also featured. Now, of course, one burning question remains: if you make a movie documenting your years working in the sex industry, will the tax collector expect you to pay taxes on your earnings? Owen Levy
