The independent sector of the film industry appears to be heading for the best year in its history as the American Film Market opens today the 16th annual edition of the world's pre-eminent motion picture trade event at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel.
Pre-registration of buyers was 58% ahead of the similar period last year and represents the registration of 1,565 individuals to date. The buyers, coming from 62 countries, represent 701 companies - 53% more than registered during the same period in 1995. This year, there will be 258 exhibitors - compared to last year's 235 - screening 177 new pictures.
With more than 5,000 people expected to attend the AFM, an estimated US$10million will be pumped into Santa Monica's economy during the nine-day event.
