A
Message from AFI
AFI Fest director Christian Gaines and the Programmer
Nancy Collet
Christian:
So, Nancy, it's time to write the Director's message. Will you help?
You are in charge of Programming, after all.
Nancy:
Sure, I'll help.
I want to make sure that everyone feels really welcome. We've worked
hard to put this program together, and it's for all the people of
Los Angeles to share and enjoy.
Christian:
Anything in particular you're proud of?
Nancy:
Yes. I'm proud of our rich and diverse International Competition.
And the 32 countries represented in our programming slate. And our
newly competitive documentary section. And the launch of the Asian
New Classics section this year. And the seven world premieres in
our New Directions from American Independents section. And our Centerpiece
Gala Before Night Falls. And the Philip Kaufman Tribute.
Christian:
The Right Stuff. I love that movie. And wait until everyone
sees his latest, Quills, on Closing Night.
Nancy:
And O Brother, Where Art Thou from Joel and Ethan Coen on
Opening Night
Christian:
I'm grateful for the chance to work with the many talented people
on our staff and at AFI who have so warmly welcomed me this year.
I love supplying these windows on other cultures, promoting cross-cultural
dialogue, and hosting the world's greatest filmmakers right here
in the movie capital of the world. We all have so much to learn
from each other. I can't wait!
Nancy:
Anything else?
Christian:
Just thanks. Thanks to all the heroes who make this huge event possible,
especially our generous and committed corporate sponsors and city
supporters, our dedicated volunteers, our enthusiastic audiences,
and everyone who loves the enchantment and enlightenment of a good
film. OK, just like we rehearsed, Nancy
Christian
and Nancy: Thanks for your interest in AFI Fest 2000!
